The Pryors opted for a weather-resistant masonry construction method, reinforced with steel wind posts, for their exposed coastal plot.
Architect Ben White of Lilly Lewarne came up with a design that celebrated the spectacular sea views and the coastline that stetched to either side of the house. A large balcony and a decking area offer further opportunities to enjoy the special location. The design had to operate within strict margins as the plot is in both a site of special scientific interest (SSSI) and an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB). The ridge height therefore had to match that of the original house.
The constant exposure to salty air and water meant that Debs Pryor and her architect had to thoughtfully specify the whole fabric of the building – from the marine grade steel used throughout to the hardwood framed windows.
After 14 months of project management stress, Debs, Nathan and their friends now enjoy a superb modern five-bedroom home. “I love the windows in the master bedroom, they’re so atmospheric,” says Debs. “In fact, it feels as if you could be on a boat, as you can only see the horizon.”
