Stair rods offer a simple, effective way to turn a functional staircase into an attractive feature. They can also help create the illusion of breadth - even with the narrowest of stairs. As long as you have wooden treads and risers, you can fit stair rods regardless of whether your staircase is a straight up-and-down arrangement, winder or has half landings.

This month, three Build It readers will each receive 13 Vision stair rods plus fixings, worth £331.50 per set. The Vision range from Stairrods (UK) is suitable for stair runners and is available in four contemporary designs - Arrow, Piston, Sphere (shown left) and Balladeer. Seven finishes are offered, including cool chrome, satin nickel and black.

The sturdy, thick-gauge, hollow rods are made to measure to suit your staircase. They are 12.5mm in diameter and come complete with a pair of solid brass hinge brackets (plus screws) in a matching finish. Suitable for stair runners of any width, the rods are attached simply by screwing the brackets in place at either end of the runner.

Vision rods are protected with a lacquer, so once fitted they require minimal maintenance. To keep yours in top condition, all that's need is an occasional wipe with a damp cloth.
