Where can I source imported slate roof tiles?

Hi can anyone please help?

I am building a timber clad house next year and want to have a slate roof. I understand slates are cheaper from China, does anyone have a contact for Chinese slates?

Thanks

While I’m sure it’s possible, I’ve not heard of anyone importing Chinese slates directly for their self build project. The standard route would be to purchase them through a UK-based stockist. This will give you much easier recourse should there be any issues with the product. A quick Google search should unearth some suppliers.

Imported slate (also available from Spain, Brazil and other countries) does tend to be cheaper than home-quarried types. But it’s widely accepted that the quality and durability of Welsh and other UK slates is higher.

Nevetheless, imported types can be perfectly suitable for a self build or renovation. The key is to do your research and ensure the slates you’re buying conform to British Standards (BS EN 123261 tests for water absorption, frost resistance etc). Ask to see technical specs too – for instance, the carbonate content should be no higher than 20% or the slate tiles may be prone to discolouring.

Most slate tiles are sold with some kind of guarantee – check the length of this (ideally it should be 30 years or more) and check the conditions regarding installation and upkeep.
