With two previous self-builds under their belts, James and Selina Vickers were eager to embark on their next home – this time a cutting-edge eco house.

Fortunately, the couple already owned a plot, previously occupied by a builder’s yard used by James’s  company.

With planning officers indicating a preference for stone cladding, the resulting style is a contemporary take on traditional Manx architecture that incorporates large expanses of glazing.

A big glazed gable faces south and allows light to flood into the master bedroom on the upper level and a sun lounge on the ground floor. A cleverly designed study has also been incorporated, which can be hidden away behind sliding pocket doors when not in use.

A sweeping staircase rises up from the double height hallway and splits into two galleried landings, leading to bedrooms and baths on the first floor. All four rooms are ensuite, and the master benefits from dressing areas positioned to either side of the vaulted space.
