In search of a bright, open-plan home, Paul and Nikki Blunden decided to take on the renovation of a dated 1920s detached property in Berkshire.

The build was anything but straight forward, with the couple rallying against structural issues and access problems to complete the project.

Now complete, all of their hard work feels more than worthwhile. Although they’re enamoured of the entire home, Paul and Nikki regard the spacious family room as their favourite part of their newly revamped house, especially the kitchen area. “It has a 3.2m long island that has become a social hub,” says Nikki.

“The feature wall, with lighted recesses providing soft illumination, helps create a large yet cosy space. In summer, we have so much light flooding in through the bifold doors, which really helps connect the inside with the garden.” Other favourite features include the double-height hallway and the stunning oak, brushed steel and glass staircase.
