Dheeraj and Taniya Malik were living in Slough in a four-bedroom townhouse with their two children, but decided they needed a bigger home where they could easily entertain their family and friends.
They had always wanted to build their own home, but only got the ball rolling when a friend told them about Graven Hill and the fully serviced self build plots on offer. “Previously, we were put off by all the hassle of finding the right place and getting planning permission,” says Dheeraj.
The Plot Passport set out what sort of home could be built on their plot, and the couple decided on an insulated concrete formwork (ICF) build route, thanks to its short lead time, quick construction, air-tightness and solid structure.
The property is set across three floors and includes five bedrooms and five bathrooms. The layout maximises the property’s proportions, resulting in an open-plan feel when entertaining. “We wanted to have a games room, and I am a bit of a whisky lover, so I wanted to have a bar,” says Dheeraj.
With both sets of parents living in India, it was essential that the house could meet the needs of multi-generational living. A large ensuite bedroom on the ground floor provides comfort for guests during long-stay visits.
The original company that would be building the home dissolved early in the process, but Dheeraj was able to secure the tradespeople directly instead to finish the work. After having such a rewarding experience at Graven Hill, Dheeraj decided to share his know-how with other self-builders, forming the Iconic Development Company. The firm specialises in ICF home construction and has worked with several self-builders both on and off the Graven Hill site.
