The brief from Michael was to create a special, luxury home within ancient woodland. We worked with Michael to unlock potential in his plot: we focussed the views down to the garden and angled the main link of the house so that it looked straight towards Farmoor reservoir in the distance. We worked with him over several design meetings, making sure we gave him the time to get his design exactly how he wanted it to be. It was a very interactive process.

The property is based on a T shape in plan form. It focusses its views both down the landscaped garden and over to Farmoor, away from neighbouring properties creating privacy. Careful detailing in the arts and crafts style with decorative oak framing adds character and internal interest.

Natural daylight is maximised with lots of glazing to the rear in particular and with generous floor to ceiling heights, and elements of double volume spaces there is a real feeling of luxury and spaciousness.

This project was shortlisted for four 2018 Build It Awards including the Best Self-Build Architect category.
