Minima Sliding showcases a transformative extension to a Grade II-listed cottage in Kent. Vanessa Ferrett and her husband, restaurateurs who own Lime Wharf Cafe near Rye, embarked on a project to expand their 1601-built home with a contemporary oak-framed kitchen and living room. The extension, measuring approximately 12m by 5m, effectively doubles the size of the house and is connected to the original structure via a glazed link.

A standout feature of the project is the installation of Minima Sliding’s frameless sliding doors, which span 7.86 meters and open up to a 5.2-meter-wide expanse when fully retracted. This design choice not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also facilitates a seamless transition between the indoor living space and the garden terrace. The use of matching limestone floor tiles in both the kitchen and terrace further blurs the boundaries, creating an open, cohesive environment.

The couple’s decision to incorporate extensive glazing was driven by their desire to maximize natural light and maintain visual connectivity with the outdoors. Despite the modern additions, the extension respects the historical integrity of the original cottage, with traditional materials like reclaimed Victorian school tiles used for the roof.

The result is a dynamic and inviting space that has become the heart of the home, ideal for both intimate family gatherings and hosting larger groups. The thoughtful integration of modern design elements with the cottage’s historic charm exemplifies how contemporary architecture can enhance and coexist with traditional structures.
