We originally met Robert and Jen at a self-build show in 2013, and helped to kindle their ideas for building their own home.
They lived in a draughty large Victorian terrace house, but really loved modernist architecture.
Understandably, they also found the idea of a highly energy-efficient Scandinavian style home very appealing. After several ups and downs, they finally found a plot that their dream design was well suited to and applied for planning permission themselves, then asked us to manage the rest of the build process.
Their build started in mid-August 2017 with the creation of a super-insulated raft foundation, which was fitted with underfloor heating pipework.
The house frame – manufactured offsite in large panels with triple-glazed windows pre-fitted – was delivered and erected during the first week of September 2017, with the EPDM flat roof being completed by day 6 of the build.
Having sold their family home to fund the build, Robert and Jen lived in a holiday home for the duration of the works, and relied on daily updates from site via email and use of a shared ‘cloud drive’ with photos and videos to keep them updated.
In January 2018 they moved in, and found it unusual to be able to walk around indoors in T-shirts while it was cold outside – especially when the ‘Beast from the East’ provided them with an unexpected amount of snow outside for South Wales!
