Extending a double garage and permitted development

I have a double garage and want to add another double garage . I would like to do this as a permitted development if possible. My question is, can I build the new double garage onto my existing double garage (to save building a wall) or do I need to build the new garage beside the existing double garage - maybe with a gap?

To be able to add on to your existing garage as permitted development, you first need to establish whether the existing garage would fall within the permitted development limits. If it would, and the new garage would too, then a joined approach will be permitted as well. With any larger scale permitted development scheme it is advisable to seek a certificate of lawfulness from the council, in order to get formal confirmation that the works are indeed permitted.
