On track

Part of the terms we agreed to when we bought our plot is that we have to construct a track across farmland to gain access to it. The track will be 4 metres wide and about 150 metres long. How do I calculate the tonnage of stone I will have to order?

Answers

The area of your road is 600 square metres. So if the depth of the stone was 300mm, the volume would be of 180 cubic metres, plus 7.5 per cent for waste, which equals 194 cubic metres. Stone weighs approximately 2,800kg per cubic metre so that means you would need about 543 metric tonnes of material.
