Repro or renovate?

3 December 2012

I’m renovating a Victorian house and would like to fit a cast-iron roll-top bath in the bathroom. Is it worth restoring an original, or should I go for a reproduction?

Answers

It really depends on the condition of the original – if it’s really badly worn it will cost more to repair that it’s worth. Professional re-enamelling is carried out off-site and will cost around £800, while resurfacing costs around £300. Reproduction baths cost anything from £750 to £4,000, so it really depends on how much you want to pay.
