Many period details and features were removed or covered in the 1960s and 1970s, usually just to fit the fashion of the time. Take off the cover (lay down plenty of dust sheets first) and check the condition of the flue. Fine cracks in the fireback can be repaired with fire cement, but don’t use the fireplace until you’ve cleaned and smoke tested the chimney.
