Site is too special

I have a plot that has been refused planning permission as it’s within 400m of a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in Dorset. The planners agree on house design and access. Is there any way to fight the SSSI ruling?

Answers

Sites of Special Scientific Interest are designated to protect a wide range of natural phenomena, from unique geological features through to the habitats of rare species. The effect of nearby housebuilding on SSSIs relating to the habitat of ground-nesting birds has become a particular problem over the last year. Talk to your council and ask if they have any plans that might enable the embargo on building near the SSSI to be lifted. For example, if additional land can be made available as suitable groundnesting bird habitat, this can offset the perceived damage from nearby residents and their cats and dogs.
