We plan to have various works done to our house. The builder says the work is so fragmented that he can’t prepare a firm quotation. He suggested we pay him by the day. Is this acceptable?
For small works, this can be an acceptable way of working, provided that you know the builder or they come recommended. This system is called ‘Cost Plus’ and is used on larger contracts occasionally where there is an urgent need to start the work as soon as possible. You will need to examine the receipts for the materials, or you could buy them yourself under the guidance of the builder.
