Allowing for leftovers

3 December 2012

We are starting to order the materials for our new house, but wonder what sort of allowance we should make for wastage, including half-used packages of goods?

Answers

Most material suppliers will allow you to return unopened packages but you should check this with them before ordering. If packs have been opened, you are stuck with the contents. But it can be useful to have some spare roof or floor tiles left over for future breakages, provided you have somewhere safe to store them. Here are some typical waste allowances for different materials:
Bricks 3 per cent
Ready-mixed concrete 7.5 per cent
Copper fi ttings 2.5 per cent
Floor tiles 5 per cent
Glass 7.5 per cent
Paint 5 per cent
Plaster 7.5 per cent
Plasterboard 5 per cent
Rainwater goods 2.5 per cent
Roof tiles 5 per cent
Timber 5 per cent
