The answer to this one is to have a quick chat with your local building control department. It all really depends on the nature of the work, who is doing it and how much structural work is involved.

For a simple loft conversion where attic trusses have already been fitted, the work could possibly be done under a building notice, whereby the inspector might only come and see the job once before the job is plastered out. However, if structural work such as beefing up floor joists or inserting steels is required, they will want to see drawings and will advise the specific inspection points when they should be called out to check the work.

In my experience, building control officers are a really helpful bunch of people who will be more than willing to give you the right advice before you start, which can save time and money later on. What’s more, they are most unlikely charge for any advice at this early stage. Give them a call.
