Building a characterful home in a busy urban setting can be challenging, but for Sam and Olivia, the answer was clear: natural walling stone. Their self-build project, located in a thriving suburb of Manchester, shows how traditional materials can bring warmth, authenticity, and individuality even to a modern city environment.

Keen to avoid a generic, boxy new-build appearance, Sam and Olivia worked with their architect to design a house that would stand out for all the right reasons. They chose locally sourced sandstone for the exterior, laid in a traditional coursed pattern to echo the region’s historic mills and Victorian terraces.

“Using natural walling stone completely transformed the project,” says Sam. “It immediately gave the house depth, character, and a strong sense of place, even though we’re right in the middle of the city.”

Despite its traditional roots, the home features a modern layout inside, with large open-plan living spaces and expansive glazing to maximise light. The textured stone exterior sits beautifully alongside sleek window frames and a green roof, blending heritage aesthetics with contemporary design.

Using stone also contributed to the home’s sustainability goals. The material’s natural thermal mass helps regulate indoor temperatures, reducing the need for heating and cooling, while its durability ensures low maintenance for decades to come.

Olivia adds, “People often stop and ask if the house was renovated from an older building — it’s the stone that gives it that timeless look.”
Their project proves that natural walling stone isn’t just for rural builds. With thoughtful design, it can bring lasting beauty, sustainability, and local character to self-build homes in even the most urban settings.
