When Emily and Jack purchased a disused stone barn in rural Cheshire, they dreamed of transforming it into a warm, character-filled family home. However, strict planning conditions meant that any new work had to match the original 19th-century stonework perfectly. To achieve this, they turned to Britannia Stone, specialists in supplying traditional stone for sensitive restoration and self-build projects.

“The planning officers were clear — the new stone had to be almost indistinguishable from the original,” explains Jack. “Britannia Stone understood exactly what was needed and sourced the perfect match.”

Britannia Stone supplied reclaimed and newly quarried materials carefully selected to replicate the colour, texture, and weathered appearance of the existing barn walls. Every detail, from the coursing pattern to the stone heads and sills, was considered to ensure authenticity.

The result is a seamless blend of old and new. The barn’s rustic charm has been preserved, while a discreet extension and carefully inserted new openings have brought light and practicality to the layout. Internally, original features like exposed beams and stone walls sit comfortably alongside modern touches such as underfloor heating and energy-efficient glazing.

Using matching stone materials not only satisfied planning requirements but also protected the historic integrity of the building. “It still feels like a true barn,” says Emily, “but now it works perfectly for family living.”

Emily and Jack’s project shows how, with expert sourcing and craftsmanship, a traditional stone barn conversion can retain its heritage while providing a beautiful, sustainable home for modern life — and highlights how companies like Britannia Stone play a vital role in preserving architectural character.
