Can we install solar PV on top of our garage?

We are looking to install a carport to provide additional covered parking at our property. Looking to the near future when we will most likely be driving electric cars, it seems like a good idea to construct a car port that will be able to carry solar panels on in the future. We would like to know the current availability and viability in the UK of installing solar systems to garages or car ports with a view to charging electric cars. We wonder how we compare to other European countries such as Germany who always seem to be ahead of us with these things. Which are the most tried and tested systems and kits for domestic use and have there been any advances in technology and availability?

  1. Nigel Griffiths says:

The technology for PV collection (panels or tiles) on garages is no different from that used for housing. The main system difference is that our homes run on 240V AC whereas SOME electric vehicles run on DC so no inverter would be required (some sort of controller will be needed). Excess PV generation will still need an inverter if it is to go the grid or the house. I’m not familiar with the makes – buildings are more my thing and cars are a nightmare to me. PV on the garage roof sounds like a good idea to me.
