For Anne Buchan and Jim Williamson, frequent visits to the West Coast of Scotland sparked a desire for a life shaped by water, landscape, and quiet simplicity. When remote working became possible, they decided to act, embarking on a determined search for a plot across the Highlands before securing a remote, lochside site on the Loch Carron Estate.

The land came with planning permission for a bold, turf-roofed home. Working with architect Fraser Stewart, Anne and Jim refined the design to better suit their lifestyle and the demanding Highland climate. To deliver their vision, they chose Fleming Homes, impressed by the quality of their timber frame kits, flexibility, and supportive, hands-on approach. As first-time self-builders, the reassurance and clear guidance Fleming Homes provided played a vital role in their confidence throughout the project.

The prefabricated timber frame, clad in Scottish larch and topped with a sedum roof, was erected in just three weeks in January 2024, despite severe winter conditions and logistical challenges. From kit delivery to moving in took only nine months, a testament to careful planning, strong partnerships, and the resilience of local trades.

Inside, triple-glazed windows, high levels of insulation, underfloor heating, and a wood-burning stove create a warm, energy-efficient home with minimal environmental impact. Thoughtful budgeting and hands-on involvement helped Anne and Jim realise their vision without compromise.

Rooted in its setting and exemplary in execution, Reul-Bhad was awarded Build It Best Timber Home 2025, celebrating a self-build that showcases the strength of modern timber construction and the value of choosing the right build partner in Fleming Homes.
