If you’re building, restoring or extending a brick property in a conservation area, it’s important to respect the character of the surrounding area. In fact, Planning Officers are likely to insist on like-for-like bricks or the closest possible match.
The Challenge of Matching Regional Brick Types
The challenge is that the brickwork in different regions has its own distinct characteristics. Over the centuries, regional styles have been shaped by the composition of local clay and by differences in kiln firing and hand-throwing at local brickworks.
Most of those small local brickworks have long since closed, and mass-produced bricks are often too uniform to capture the subtleties of the original brickwork.
At Northcot, we have the specialist skills to replicate the tones and textures of historic and regional bricks and can also create bespoke shapes to match.
Traditional Craftsmanship and Sophisticated Weathering
As we’ve been making bricks at our factory in Gloucestershire for over 100 years, we are passionate about traditional craftsmanship and have preserved the ancient techniques that give historic brickwork its special character.
Our clay reserves are still processed in a ‘Pan Mill’ dating back to 1919. Our master craftsmen still hand-throw the processed clay into individual sanded wooden moulds, the traditional way. We even use our original 1925 Hoffman kiln to fire bricks with an organic variation that modern kilns simply cannot replicate.
Furthermore, with our sophisticated weathering techniques create the naturally aged appearance of bricks worn by the elements, so that your new home looks as if it’s always been there!
Let us help you make the perfect match!
Our master craftsmen would love to work with you and produce a bespoke blend that not only satisfies planners but also creates a home to be truly proud of.
