This impressive country home, set in 24-acre grounds in the heart of Berkshire, stands out for its classic Georgian-style facades, made from a bespoke blend of Northcot handmade brick in soft red-orange tones.
Owners Edward and Maxine built the six-bedroom house to replace an existing disused farmhouse built in 1906, with extensions added in the 1950s and 1980s.
Brick-Built Georgian Elegance.
According to the owners, the brickwork is the first thing you notice and defines a building’s character.
“We looked far and wide for the right brick blend and, at one stage, had 30–35 brick types laid out on the ground, which we then whittled down to about 3-4 from each manufacturer,” said Edward.
“Northcot created a bespoke blend of handmade bricks that had exactly the softer red-orange tones and natural qualities that we were looking for.”
Approximately 25,000 handmade bricks and 1,000 matching specials were supplied in a bespoke blend of 70% Lyneham Red and 30% Plumsted Antique, which are gently sand-faced with a light creasing. These were then laid in a traditional Flemish bond.
“We didn’t want the brickwork to look too fussy, so we kept to the same bond pattern throughout, finished off with decorative dentils under the eaves and a string course to break up the façade. This gave the right level of elegant simplicity we were looking for”.
Why Northcot?
“Northcot were so easy to deal with and took the trouble to create a blend that matched our vision and delivered it on time, with no fuss. We are very pleased with the tone and quality of the bricks, and as it is a bespoke blend, the Northcot team will keep the details on file so that we can come back for more in the future!”
