Help how do I get my project regs finished?

19 January 2016

We recieved planning permission and paid a builder to build our extension! He dealt with all the inspections and finished the work. However the electricians only did half the job and never came back ! This was all in 2008 and so we never received a certificate of completion for the whole extension. The electric work still needs finishing off properly and I’m not sure if after all these years what to do with regards to getting a completion certificate? Help!

The best course of action would be to go to your local building control department and seek a certificate of regularisation. This basically means that you’re asking them to verify the electrics retrospectively, but be aware that they will charge commercial rates and may well want to strip back and expose wiring to ensure compliance. It will be a pain but a worthwhile one, as without the completion certificate and proof that the electrics have been certified, you will find it even more of a hassle to resolve when you eventually come to sell the property.
