Planning permission for gardens

3 December 2012

I live in a conservation area and know that I have to be careful with what I do to the exterior of the house. I’d like to create a modern garden, including decking and slate, at the back. As no-one will be able to see this, can I do what I want?

Your garden’s style of design is really none of the planners’ business – conservation area or not. You’ll only hit problems if the garden design involves any structures (including raised decking or terraces, pergolas, tree-houses, etc.) that may need planning permission. Even so, many such items will be possible under permitted development, which bypasses the need for a planning application.
