Prepare for power

I’m renovating my property and I want to kit myself out with a good range of power tools. What are the must buys and how much do they cost?

The Build It wish list would start with a couple of different drills. A hammer drill such as the Bosch PBH240RE (about £130) is good for heavyweight work such as making holes in masonry, stone or concrete and for breaking up masonry or getting tiles off the wall. Bosch also does a handy lightweight cordless drill/driver, the PSR300LI-Ion at £59.99. The Bosch PFZ500 Multisaw (£69.99) can cut wood with nails in it with the same blade, while the Skil 5866 Classic dual laser circular saw (£80) is good for powerful long straight deep cuts in timber. Add Dremel’s 10.8v Lith-Ion Multi-tool (£59.99), which cuts, grinds, shapes, sands and polishes (you can also buy extras such as a tile cutter), and you’ll be able to cut through most things. When it comes to fixing things, a high-tech level like Stanley’s SP1 Torpedo laser level (about £30 to £40) will ensure all your surfaces are straight. The Makita 216-piece drill and bit set (£20-£30) has every bit you will ever need in one box and a flexible driver for screwing round corners. The Stanley Anti-Vibe claw hammer (£15) is well-balanced for accurate hammering. It’s also handy to have a Victorinox Swiss Climber Knife (£20) for all sorts of little tasks, and a Stanley Intellisensor Pro (£70-£80) to detect wood, metal and live wires to save you drill through cables and pipes.
