Utilities for static caravan to live in whilst building

If we choose to live on site in a static caravan whilst self-building, how would we access utilities? Thanks for your reply.

If you are replacing an existing dwelling, then the obvious solution is to isolate the services to the old property and reconnect them to the caravan. If the services are not already present on the plot, then you will need them for the new property, so get in touch with the water, electricity and phone companies to investigate the viability and cost of new connections.

They will have responsibility for bringing the services to the boundary of your property and you can then arrange for temporary connection to the caravan which can then subsequently be connected to the new dwelling before you move in. You can use the meter box and electricity meter that will be used in the finished house for both options.

Don’t forget that you will be expected to pay council tax while living in the static caravan during the build and that you will need the consent of your planning authority to live there. This can be covered by a simple planning condition on the approval for the new dwelling if you ask for it to be included.
