What course would you recommend for learning how to build a house from scratch?

Hello. I am interested in learning how to build a house from scratch. I am not really interested in the pre building phase e.g. planning permission etc. I am purely interested from the first stage of building (and everything after that, which i presume is the clearing the site and digging for the foundation). Do you have a suitable course?

    Hi Shaz,

    Thanks for your question.

Our Build It Live shows (www.builditlive.co.uk) offer practical advice on how to build your own home. Here, we offer expert advice on every aspect of the build process from architects, project managers and many more professionals, with seminars, workshops and one-to-one sessions available to attend throughout the course of the exhibition. There are also thousands of products on show that will help inspire your self build project.

Build It also offer virtual training courses throughout the year. We offer independent advice, covering a variety of different phases involved in a self build project, including the post-planning stages. We have an upcoming training sessions on project management (www.self-build.co.uk/training), discussing everything from deciding how involved you want to be through to effective scheduling, budgeting and cashflow, assessing quotes and contractors, managing build quality, avoiding common project management mistakes and more.

The National Self Build & Renovation Centre offers a comprehensive three-day course on self building (www.nsbrc.co.uk). This covers the build process, including everything from clearing and setting up your site, laying the foundations and the options available for building the superstructure and roof. It does also cover the pre-building phase, however, such as planning permission, finding and evaluating land and budgeting.

Potton, a timber frame self build package company, offers a three-hour course on the next steps to take once you’ve gained planning permission for your self build project. It takes you through how to finish up your house design, organising health and safety for your site, and how to begin site investigations: (www.potton.co.uk).

Best of luck with your project plans!
