When to reclaim VAT

3 December 2012

At what stage can I apply for my VAT reclaim, and do I have to have my completion certificate when applying?

Answers

You should apply for the refund within three months of completion and you will normally be paid within 30 days. An ‘Evidence of Completion’ will be required to accompany your claim, which can be one of the following:
• a certificate of completion issued by the local planning authority
• a habitation certificate or letter from the local authority (or a temporary certificate in Scotland)
• a valuation rating or a council tax assessment, or
• a letter from your bank or building society stating that the work is complete.
If you haven’t already got one, call 0845 010 9000 and ask for a free copy of VAT Refunds for Do-It-Yourself Builders and Converters – all you need to know is clearly set out there.
