This garden room in Guildford is a bespoke home gym, built to the client’s exact specifications. Measuring 5.8m by 3.6m, 21.9m² of internal space. The apex roof reaches 4m externally, creating a vaulted ceiling of 3.4m internally, which ensures an open and uncluttered environment suitable for a full range of gym equipment and movement.
The foundation was prepared by extending, reinforcing, and deepening an existing concrete base to support the weight of equipment and regular use. Located two metres from all boundaries, the structure did not require planning permission.
Externally, the front and left elevations are clad in charred larch using the Shou Sugi Ban technique, a traditional Japanese method that chars the timber surface to improve weather resistance and durability while providing a textured black finish. Less visible areas are clad in black composite materials to reduce maintenance and cost. The roof is finished with black shingles, and a canopy accommodates customer-supplied external spotlights.
Inside, the vaulted ceiling and walls are lined with special-order beech panels, chosen for their fine, even grain and natural warmth. The floor is finished in light chestnut laminate, practical and easy-to-clean. The room is fitted with twelve spotlights, and black aluminium doors and windows complete the interior layout, ensuring adequate natural light and ventilation.
Overall, the Guildford garden gym is a purpose-built structure that balances visual design with practical usability, offering an open, durable, low-maintenance space for home exercise within a landscaped garden setting.
