Philippa Purcell, a Kiwi interior designer, and her family transformed their Edwardian home in Dulwich over a two-year renovation, aiming to bring the relaxed, outdoor-focused lifestyle of New Zealand to London. The project focused on creating light-filled, functional spaces that connect seamlessly with the south-facing garden, allowing the family to enjoy indoor-outdoor living year-round.
The rear extension was designed with a dog-leg layout rather than a full-width glass box, incorporating a covered porch typical of Kiwi homes. Minima Sliding’s doors, including a pocket door, were installed to maximise glazing, provide wide-open access to the garden, and create a minimal-framed, visually clean transition between interior and exterior. The doors’ slim 20 mm sightlines and flush thresholds ensured that the garden becomes a central feature of the home while maintaining thermal performance and easy operation.
Inside, the family prioritized natural light and openness. Glazing was taken as high as possible, and curtains were recessed to preserve the minimal ceiling lines, ensuring that the view of the garden remains uninterrupted. The open-plan layout provides a versatile space for family activities, entertaining friends, and children to play safely, while clever storage solutions, such as integrated skirting board storage, keeping the space tidy and functional.
Philippa emphasized the importance of designing for real-life use. She recommends living in a home for at least a year before planning renovations to understand how spaces are used. Extending overhangs on extensions was another tip, providing shelter from the elements and enhancing the seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.
The Dulwich project demonstrates how thoughtful design, high-quality sliding doors, and careful attention to lifestyle needs can transform a traditional home into a contemporary, light-filled living environment. Minima Sliding’s slimline doors were key in achieving a sense of openness, a strong connection to the outdoors, and a practical, stylish space that reflects the family’s Kiwi-inspired approach to daily living.
