Are Shingles a Durable Roof Covering?

How long should we expect bitumen shingles to last on a roof? Also, what is their performance like in terms of insulation and weather damage? Should we consider plastic slate instead?
Bitumen shingles probably have the same life expectancy as a bitumen felt roof; i.e. somewhere between 15 and 25 years dependent upon exposure. However, they will only waterproof the roof as a covering and do not contribute in terms of insulation.
When you refer to plastic slate, I assume you mean Ecoslate. This product is designed to sit directly on a flat timber substrate and before deciding to use it, you should ensure that your building control officer is happy with the detail and any ventilation implications.
