I need advice on selecting and specifying simple lintels or beams. I know I would need a structural engineer’s advice for complex loads, but surely not for a simple domestic situation, such as a lintel or beam over a window or unsupported space in a single-storey building with only the roof loading above. I appreciate I can fi nd out the tile load via the tile manufacturer’s data, but how do I go on to use that to select a beam?
