BOOK YOUR TWO FREE TICKETS HEREI'm planning to build a 3.5x1.5m part-brick bbq shelter, with a 1m high singe skin brick wall and on top a timber frame with tiled roof.
Main problem is, I am planning to build it on clay ground, and part of it will be over a (1m deep) drainage trench filled with gravel, so the ground isn't very stable.
For the foundations, is it best to:
1) dig out and pour a concrete pad and mesh-type reinforcement. If so, how deep, given that I will be building a wall on it?
2) do a strip foundation where the wall will go. If so, what depth?
3) just find a different location for it
Any answers much appreciated. Thanks for your help!
Foundations in clay are normally deeper than in other types of more consolidated granular ground bearing strata. But how deep they need to be is determined by the type/grade of clay and the loads being applied.
You can also span your own domestic drainage by using appropriate lintels although, it’s probable that the depth of your concrete foundations will be below the drainage pipe invert. If you want to opt for a reinforced raft then you should really consult a structural engineer who will give you the correct reinforcement sizes and design to use and also the specified slab thicknesses.
Good luck.
