Can We Extend a Small Brick Building?

We have been offered a piece of garden land which has a brick building on it. We would like to extend this building to provide us with a small dwelling for permanent/personal residential use. Can we do this? What permissions would we need?

You would need full planning permission to convert and extend the building for use as a single dwelling. Following on from planning permission, you would need to apply for consent under the Building Regulations.

Whether you would get permission depends on all the usual planning considerations. These include whether you’re in an area where permission for new houses is usually granted i.e. a village, town or built up area; whether the design would fit in with the area; whether there is adequate and safe access for vehicles; whether there would be privacy for both the new and ‘donor’ house; and whether there would be adequate garden space for you and the donor house.
