Conservation area restrictions

Our site borders a conservation area. We are experiencing some problems with the planners, as they say that anything we build will affect the other homes in the conservation area, so they’ve given us some extremely limiting conditions to adhere to. We are happy to build a sympathetic house, but thought we would have more freedom at the rear of the property to fit solar panels, as they won’t be visible from any public angle – should this be the case?

The effect of a development on the setting of, or outlook from, a conservation area is a legitimate planning consideration. However, if a part of a building doesn’t feature in a public view there should be less imposing restrictions on its appearance.
Regarding solar panels, you shouldn’t have problems with installing these, given the government’s commitment to promoting renewable energy use, and the fact that more often than not solar panels don’t require planning permission.
