Can I Extend as Part of My Barn Conversion?

Hello.

Any advice for getting planning permission accepted on a barn conversion? They want it to be similar to the original footings which doesn't make it any bigger, however we have a courtyard wall that we wish to change into an extension.

Help!

Many thanks

Most councils’ policies on barn conversions contain a proviso that the building be capable of conversion without significant rebuilding or extension. That seems to be the case here. How strictly that is interpreted inevitably varies from council to council and even between planning officers within the same council.

You stand a better chance where there is some historic precedent for additional space, or, as in your case, some historic feature such as a wall to incorporate into the extension. Research other conversion applications and decisions within your council area and see whether any extensions have been allowed on converted buildings and in what circumstances. Bear in mind that sometimes it pays to secure the conversion of the central building first, and then work on extending it.

In all cases, sympathetic architecture and appropriate use of materials are essential.
