Hi, As part of a planning application there is a CIL payment required. The planning authority states no exemptions in its correspondence. Does this mean there is no exemption for Self build as well?

  1. Lucy Aplin says:

When you’re making a planning application for a new house, conversion or extension, you may have to complete a CIL (Community Infrastructure Levy) form, if the council has an adopted CIL scheme in place – not all do. That form refers to the self-build exemptions, and you can say you wish to claim an exemption and fill in a supplementary form with details. A council can’t unilaterally declare it doesn’t accept exemptions, so it’s not clear why that is stated in this case. Note that the exemption must be claimed at the right time, and it’s possible to fall foul of the rules and miss out. Contact the council and question what they have said.
