What’s sustainability?

3 December 2012

My local authority is soon set to ask for “candidate sites” for the next Local Development Plan. One of their criteria for selection is sustainabilty. How can I promote my site with this in mind? I have 2.2 acres of land and part of it was previously used for an allotment, and another part of the land used to be a single track railway.

Sustainability is a big buzz word in planning at the moment, although in the absence of a statutory definition nobody is entirely sure what it means. For most planning purposes, the element of sustainability that carries most weight is accessibility. Does your site have easy access to public transport, bus and rail, and the main road system? Does it have easy access to shops, schools and places of employment? Could residents readily walk to any/most of these facilities and, if so, would it be a reasonably level and safe walk? If you can answer “yes” to these questions, then your site will be viewed as being in a sustainable location because residents won’t have to rely on private cars for most everyday trips.
