Pond House, in Essex, is a beautifully crafted oak framed home designed for modern living and future comfort. The homeowner, Pauline, had lived in a converted timber-frame barn for 30 years with her husband and children. After being widowed, and with her children grown-up, she decided to build a new, more manageable home on a portion of her current plot, embracing the chance to create a thoughtfully designed, energy-efficient dwelling underpinned by high-quality timber construction. Carpenter Oak worked with Pauline and her architect to deliver a bespoke structural frame, giving the new home character, solidity and longevity.
Pond House offers a layout and finish that reflect careful planning and attention to detail. With its oak frame providing warmth and structural integrity, the design gives Pauline a home built to last — while remaining manageable, energy-efficient and suited to modern life. With four bedrooms she has plenty of space for visiting children and grandchildren, and the impressive vaulted open plan living area has plenty of light from the glazed gable end. The design incorporates useful additions such as a built-in lift (for when using stairs may get a bit harder as she grows older), and an oak balcony above the living areas, creating additional sitting areas with views over the garden. In the bedrooms and bathrooms there are thoughtful touches such as a roll-top bath and bespoke wardrobes which fit perfectly in with the oak frame.
This project demonstrates how a bespoke oak frame home can combine heritage materials with modern design sensibilities — creating a house that’s not only beautiful but built for a new chapter in its owner’s life.
