Project Spotlight: ‘We love listening to the birds squabbling in the morning’

Pete and Angela Tanner, seasoned self builders, embarked on a new project in 2020, purchasing a 1.7-acre plot near Winchester, Hampshire. They demolished a 1937 chalet bungalow and collaborated with architect Nick Hebden of Hebden Design Studio to create a mid-century modern home that would complement Pete’s extensive design collection. The result is a 3,700 sq ft, five-bedroom house featuring a distinctive mono-pitch zinc roof and a blend of Danish Petersen brick slithers, Portland stone, and oiled cedar cladding.

Central to the design is a spacious 8m x 8m kitchen with expansive glazing on three sides, integrating the indoor and outdoor spaces. The couple chose Minima Sliding’s slimline Ultraline sliding doors to maximize the rural views and enhance the connection to the countryside. The doors’ minimal 20mm sightlines and flush thresholds allow for unobstructed vistas and a seamless transition to the terrace.

The Tanners appreciated Minima Sliding’s attentive service, including site visits and guidance on structural considerations, ensuring a smooth installation process. The doors have transformed their living experience, providing a tranquil setting where they can enjoy the sounds of nature. Pete notes, “We love listening to the birds squabbling in the morning with the sliding doors wide open.”

For those considering similar projects, Pete advises thorough research and planning, emphasizing the importance of quality materials and professional guidance. He highly recommends Minima Sliding for their exceptional products and customer service.
