I want to build a home in my back garden for me to retire in.

Do I need to sign up to the Right to Build register before I apply for planning?

    Hi Chris,

You don’t need to sign up to your local Right to Build register to apply for planning. However, it couldn’t hurt your application to do so.

The Right to Build registers are in place to create enough demand for councils to permission sufficient land. While there is no restriction to applying for planning without being registered, it can certainly help put pressure on your local authority to accept permissioning a garden plot. We certainly encourage everyone who wants to build their own home to sign up to their local register.
