I own a plot of land I’d like to build a house on – where should I start?

I purchased an end of terrace house three years ago and I own some land next door which is approximately the same size as my home. I don't have a clue about new builds.

Can someone please tell me what I need to do to see if I will be able to build a new house on this land and provide any rough costs to get this approved? Who offers this service? I'm based in Harlow, Essex if you can please recommend anyone who can help or what someone might charge me to do this for me.

Thanks,
Riz

    Hi Riz,

    Thanks for your question.

The first step is to see if you are able to getting planning permission to build on your land. Our Beginner’s Guide to Planning Permission has some helpful information and advice to get you started and point you in the right direction. You can speak to a planning professional or get pre-application advice from the council to get an idea of whether building on your land is viable.

I’d also recommend taking a look at our Complete Guide to Making a Successful Planning Application if your land does have potential to build on.

Best of luck with your project plans,
