Coldwell Dairy is a 19th-century stone barn complex undergoing careful conversions into comfortable living spaces. When the owner, Rob, tackled his first barn, he installed an oil-fired boiler. However, encouraged by a neighbour’s experience with heat pumps installed by us, he decided to explore a renewable alternative for his next barn conversion.
Rob’s goal was consistent, efficient heating that would cater to the hybrid layout of the conversion—underfloor heating on the ground floor and radiators above. After reviewing options, we recommended and installed a Vaillant AroTherm+ air source heat pump. This unit can operate efficiently even in low external temperatures, making it well suited to the combination of heating methods across the property.
From first contact through to handover, we worked to ensure a smooth, reliable installation. We coordinated with Rob on the layout of pipework, integration with existing heating zones, and sizing to meet the thermal demands of a stone-built structure. The choice of air source heat pump also allowed us to avoid extensive disruption or drilling, which can be problematic in conversions of historic buildings.
Rob was delighted with the result. As he put it:
“There were no glitches … I don’t think we had to call them back for any remedial work … IMS came and absolutely nailed the first one within the timescales they said they would do.”
His confidence in the system—combined with savings over his former oil heating—led him to choose us again for a third barn conversion.
