Winner of Best Timber Frame Home at the 2024 Build It Awards

Nestled harmoniously into its green belt woodland plot, in close proximity to a listed building by celebrated architect Edwin Lutyens – with all its consequent planning challenges – this house is necessarily modest and understated from the outside. Step indoors, however, and the timber frame architecture sings.

Described by one awards judge as “the perfect candidate for timber frame,” this project is an exemplar of how to achieve a beautiful bespoke home on a tricky plot. Key to that was the collaboration between TAS Architects, Timber Innovations and the clients.

Consisting of two timber frame, barn-style volumes separated by a tranquil courtyard, the house is beautifully realised. A major factor in this is the extensive structural drawings that form part of the technical design pack – indeed, the judges felt the architect had gone above and beyond in terms of the timber frame detailing, including elements such as the warm roof.

This is a house that was designed in timber frame from the off, with a low-key exterior aesthetic that works beautifully in its setting, yet surprises with crisp, wow-factor detailing internally. From the elegant rafters through to the expertly-positioned glazing, perfectly capturing views of the garden from key spaces, every aspect of the project was thought through and presented in a considered form to the contractors – enabling the house to be built exactly as designed.
