Book here!Hi. My next door neighbor in is currently in the middle of building a new wooden garage which is slightly bigger and taller than the previous brick build they took down a couple of weeks a go. I'm I able to do this as well ? Do I need to get planning permission for this ?
Hi Mark,
You always need planning permission for any new building, including replacements of existing buildings. The garage might, though, fall within Permitted Development criteria.
Permitted Development (PD) is effectively a blanket planning permission for certain kinds of development, including many minor domestic-type projects. PD rights are subject to numerous qualifying criteria, and you’ll need to check whether your project complies.
The government’s technical guide, entitled ‘Permitted development rights for householders’, available online, is a good place to start. You can also find information on the Planning Portal: https://www.planningportal.co.uk/info/200187/your_responsibilities/37/planning_permission/2
