How Much Does Concrete Slab Cost?

8 October 2018
by Linda Thorne

We are using a turnkey company for our first self build, but have to do the concrete slab ourselves.

The house is approximately 235m2, with the ground floor being 130m2.

Can you give me an average cost for the concrete slab using a contractor? Many thanks

  1. A slab that size would need around 40m3 of concrete, assuming a depth of 300mm.

A m3 of concrete costs between £65 and £85 depending on the specification, so budget between £2,600 and £3,500 for your slab, plus labour.

Does this person know that the drainage waste pipes and the ducting for water, electrics and BT is in place before concreting?

Mike, the costs you mention are just for the concrete?
The question was what would the average cost for the concrete slab using a contractor?
So not just materials but with labour etc

    Hi Dermot,

Quotes for similar works will vary and that will depend on various factors.

However, you can read Mike’s thorough advice on How to Get Realistic Quotes from your Builder.

Hopefully the advice will provide you with the right tools to ensure you are happy with the quote given by your builder.

Budget around £95/m2. This would allow for site preparation, importing stone and installing this in compacted layers, insulation and damp proof membranes. I’d also think a slab at 200mm would be sufficient depth and area rate would include for this supplied and laid. You need to see how your site levels work too. If you need to excavate existing material then costs will vary depending on how deep you need to dig to make levels work and if the dug material can be kept on site or has to be sent off site. This also impacts how much stone needs to be brought into site to make levels work with proposed ground floor level. A smaller area would increase the cost per m2. You have a large area so get better economies of scale. You also need to factor what retains the concrete as this will be additional cost.

Hi JohnB, is it possible to use your contractor who did the Ground works for the £95/m. I have a number of self build projects.
