Build your dream home with confidence
BOOK YOUR TWO FREE TICKETS HEREI have currently got outline planning for a dwelling in Scotland but unlike England they do charge self-builders "developer contributions", which in my case is £8000 which would be payable on the day I start.
I have written to both Paul Wheelhouse and John Lamont in the Scottish Government regarding this to ask why it is different to England. They have both had replies from Kevin Stewart SMP (Minister for Local Government & Housing) who has said there will be a Planning Bill at the end of 2018.
My question is have you been asked about this before and is there any pressure that your magazine can put on Scotland to help self-builders?
Look forward to your reply

Hi Peter,
Thank you for getting in touch with us and sending your query. First, congratulation on starting your self-build journey! Hopefully things will run as smoothly as possible.
We can understand how the differences in legislation across the UK can be confusing, perhaps sometimes frustrating.
While Build It magazine is not a publication to ‘put pressure’ on public office (our role is to inform and offer practical advice for self-builders and renovators), I can suggest you get in touch with the National Custom & Self Build Association.
NaCSBA has a Scottish arm, the Scottish Working Group who are more likely to be able to be able to help you, listen to the challenges you face as a self-builder in Scotland, and offer solutions. NaCSBA’s representative for Scotland is Angela Doran, who is also self-build co-ordinator in Glasgow Council.
On June 20th, the Custom & Self-Build expo will be in Glasgow, which should be a nice way to meet other budding self-builders and learn about what’s happening in the industry. You can find details here.
