Renton Hall Extension, completed in 2023 in East Lothian, Scotland, is a beautifully resolved timber-framed addition to a historic Georgian country manor. WT Architecture managed the renovation of the 200-year-old B-listed manor, which included a contemporary wing designed to create generous family living spaces while reconnecting the home to its garden and landscape.

The new extension, crafted by Carpenter Oak in Douglas fir, introduces an open-plan living and dining space that flows into a restored walled garden, forming a harmonious connection between the interior and the outdoors. The timber used is sustainably sourced, partially kiln-dried British Douglas fir, planed all round — chosen for its stability and refined finish, ensuring longevity and minimal movement over time.

The design draws subtly on traditional vernacular references — with the new wing offset from the original south gable to create a courtyard and respect the scale and character of the existing manor house. The extension not only supplies additional living, dining and utility space, but also provides a contemporary, light-filled environment that complements the historic core of the building.

This sensitive blending of historic architecture with modern timber craftsmanship exemplifies how a new extension can enhance a heritage building — adding space, light, and connection to the landscape — without compromising character or integrity.
