When a devastating fire destroyed Len and Yvonne Rose’s thatched cottage in West Sussex in 2021, the couple–then in their 80s–faced a life-changing decision: sell the land they had cherished for over two decades or rebuild on the same idyllic plot. With their half-acre garden untouched and family and friends close by, choosing to stay felt natural.

Completely new to self building, the Roses turned to their daughter, Melonie, for support. Wanting a fresh start rather than a replica of their former home, they dreamed of a contemporary, easy-to-maintain property with a downstairs bedroom, ensuite spaces and a striking galleried landing. Melonie introduced them to Scandia-Hus, whose chalet-style Cranbrook design matched their aspirations perfectly.

Teaming up with Scandia-Hus and trusted builder Peter “Robbo” Robertson, the couple selected a high-performance timber frame package for its efficiency, speed and quality. Robbo and his long-standing team managed the entire construction process—from demolition and groundworks to frame erection and interior fitting—overcoming challenges such as severe weather, a burst waterpipe and delayed glazing with care, clarity and professionalism.

Len and Yvonne moved into their beautifully finished home in July 2023. The project later received national recognition, going on to win the Build It Awards Self Build or Renovation Project of the Year 2025, celebrating its thoughtful design, exceptional craftsmanship and the inspirational resilience of the homeowners.

Today, the Roses could not be happier. “We feel incredibly lucky,” says Yvonne. “Our new home is comfortable, efficient and perfectly suited to our lives. And being able to stay on the same plot, surrounded by friends, family and our garden, means the world.”
